2013 TxETDA/USETDA Region 3 Joint Conference Updates

The 2013 TxETDA/USETDA Region 3 Conference Planning Committee recently issued an extension of the call for proposals, a reminder to register before the early bird deadline, and a call for registration for the free pre- and post-conference workshops. More information can be found below.

Poster Proposal Deadline Has Been Extended to January 30

There is still time to submit poster proposals. The deadline has been extended until Wednesday, January 30. As an added bonus accepted poster submissions will have until February 8 to register at the Early Bird Rate of $60. Share your knowledge, current challenges, and workflow solutions with fellow colleagues! Not Sure if you have anything worth sharing? Get your feet wet by submitting a poster proposal. Posters are low risk, high impact ways to share what you are doing related to ETDs. We would be happy to provide guidance and templates for first-timers. Poster backing and easels will also be provided.

Don’t miss out on this low cost, high-impact professional development and networking opportunity! The 2013 TxETDA/USETDA Region 3 Joint Conference will be held at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX on Thursday and Friday, February 28-March 1, 2013.

USETDA Region 3 members are especially invited to attend this conference, but all of those with an interest in ETDs, regardless of location are welcome to attend. USETDA Region 3 includes the states of Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming.

Original, timely, and relevant to the ETD field
Contribute to the advancement of ETDs

Pre- and Post-Conference Workshops

In addition to the main conference program, we are excited to offer two opportunities on Thursday morning and Friday afternoon to extend your ETD knowledge – at no additional cost.

Local Activities and Events

Also, if you’d like to extend your stay through the weekend, consider attending First Fridays in downtown Bryan. First Fridays is held in the evening on the first Friday of each month and is an opportunity to enjoy free, live entertainment, browse through a variety of shops, try local cuisine or wine bars/pubs, etc.

On Friday and Saturday evening, the Memorial Student Center Opera & Performing Arts Society will (MSC OPAS) will be hosting Hooray for Hollywood, a live performance of popular movie musicals from the last 50 years. Tickets can be purchased online .

Or, also on Friday and Saturday, watch The Theatre Company of Bryan/College Station present Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony-Award-winning musical, Sunset Boulevard. Tickets can be purchased online.

Texas A&M University system institutions may also want to pair this conference with the Teaching with Technology Conference, which will be offered Wednesday and Thursday (Feb 27-Feb 28). This free event includes a wide variety of technology sessions and two keynote presentations by leaders in higher education. Registration is available online.

Putting Dissertation Online Isn’t an Obstacle to Print Publication, Surveys Find

An article, published in the Chronicle of Higher Education, shares the results of a recent NDLTD study regarding science journal editors perceptions of ETDs as a prior publication. Based on a 28% response rate, 55% indicated that submissions from ETDs were always welcome, there were 13% that would not consider ETD-based submissions, 21% indicated they would be considered on a case-by-case basis, and 9% indicated that the submission would have to be subsantially revised. My take home message: Students still need to do their homework. Embargos are a good idea for some students who may be submitting to the minority group of publishers who are cautious about accepting works based on ETDs, while open access may be perfectly fine for many. Student authors cannot make assumptions. They need to know their field and the general assumptions of the journals they plan to work with.

The TxETDA/USETDA Region 3 Conference Planning Committee invites proposals for oral presentations and posters to be exhibited during the Texas ETD Association/USETDA Region 3 Joint Conference, which will be held at Texas A&M University on Thursday, February 28 and Friday, March 1, 2013.

Please submit a 200-300 word abstract that includes the following information:

Title of poster or oral presentation
Author(s), including institutional or corporate identity and email address
Summaryof content to be included in poster or presentation
- Well written, clear, logical, and well organized
- Original, timely, and relevant to the ETD field
- Contribute to the advancement of ETDs

Poster and presentation proposals will be reviewed and selected on the basis of the following criteria:

Relevance to the focus of the conference
Significance of content
Helpfulness/interest to conference attendees

Oral Presentation Details:

Oral presenters should plan for a 45 minute presentation with at least 15 minutes for questions and answers. Exact session times will be assigned following review and acceptance.

DEADLINE FOR ORAL PRESENTATION ENTRIES: Wednesday, January 9, 2013. Review of submissions will begin immediately. Entrants will be notified of their acceptance or denial no later than: Wednesday, January 16, 2013.

Poster Details:

Posters will be displayed on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. All poster presenters must be present at the poster session to answer questions.

Posters size information will be forthcoming. Easels may be available at the conference site upon advanced request; however the TxETDA will be unable to provide power for multimedia displays.

DEADLINE FOR POSTER ENTRIES: Tuesday, January 22, 2013. Review of submissions will begin immediately. Entrants will be notified of their acceptance or denial no later than: Friday, February 1, 2013.

Call For Proposals USETDA 2013

The US Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Association has issued the call for proposals for USETDA 2013, to be held in Claremont, California (near Disneyland resort, beaches & Hollywood) July 24-26, 2013. Proposals will be accepted for presentations, panel sessions and posters. For more information see the USETDA Proposal Submission Site.

Deadline: Proposals should be submitted before March 15, 2013 to be considered.

Jarrow, Electronic Thesis, and Dissertation Software

Those of you interested in ETD workflow management systems may want to look at this article, in the Code4Lib Journal. Abstract is below:

Collecting and disseminating theses and dissertations electronically is not a new concept. Tools and platforms have emerged to handle various components of the submission and distribution process. However, there is not a tool that handles the entirety of the process from the moment the student begins work on their thesis to the dissemination of the final thesis. The authors have created such a tool which they have called Jarrow. After reviewing available open-source software for theses submission and open-source institutional repository software this paper discusses why and how Jarrow was created and how it works. Jarrow can be downloaded and the project followed at http://code.library.unbc.ca.

Save the Date! 2013 TxETDA/USETDA Region 3 Joint Conference

Mark your calendars for the 2013 Texas ETD Association/USETDA Region 3 Joint Conference to be held at Texas A&M University February 28-March 1, 2013.

TxETDA is collaborating with the US ETD Association to offer its first regional conference. USETDA Region 3 includes the states of Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming. Non-Region 3 members are also welcome to attend.

The committee is working now to organize a program packed with helpful and practical information to advance the knowledge of ETD professionals, as well as to provide opportunities for networking with graduate school and library colleagues.

The call for presentation and poster proposals will be forthcoming. Start thinking now about information you might share with colleagues in a poster or presentation format.
