There are a number of institutions who make exceptions to their embargo policies for creative writing students - Virginia Tech is one example. I would encourage you to look at similar institutions and gather information that you can use to petition your university for an exception/waiver or a change in policy.

I think it wholly depends on the type of dissertation. My problem with this whole deal is that my university (a large, state-funded, R1 institution) requires that I submit my dissertation to one of these archives that is publicly searchable via the net. So, 1) I have no choice in the matter. 2) There is an embargo process, but very limited (not long enough to actually work through the publication process); and 3) I am a creative writer. What publishing company is going to buy a creative work (novel, short story publication, etc.) that can be Googled for free? None.

Thus, by uploading my creative dissertation, I am not only hurting my chances to actually publish the work, but also crippling my job market prospects if I cannot figure out a way to get it published within the short amount of time that the embargo is in place.

Suggestions?

Appreciate the kind words about TDL.

As is becoming standard practice in the digital age, some presenters worked on their slide sets right up until the last minute. We'll be posting those slides during the day on 05/20/2010, and I'll be talking to Laura about where to place the slides from the Vireo Users Group from TDL on the same day.

We felt this year went well, and we hope to get the feedback of attendees so we may continue to find ways to improve your experience.

Thanks to Laura for guiding us through the TxETDA meeting and making the VUG meeting such a success.
